Fire engulfs iconic Giggling Marlin in Cabo San Lucas

One of the original bars in Cabo San Lucas, the Giggling Marlin, has suffered a major fire this morning, June 15, 2024. The fire engulfed Cabos Giggling Marlin at approximately 6 a.m. local time, and the cause is unknown at present. Billowing smoke could be seen for miles and also blanketed parts of the Cabo marina area, as the local bomberos battled the blaze a good part of the morning. This was the second fire in the history of the Giggling Marlin, with the first being many years ago when a patron inside shot a flare gun into the thatched roof late one night.

Built in 1984, the Giggling Marlin was at one time the only bar located in downtown Los Cabos and has a storied history among visitors to Cabo San Lucas. As one of the originals and longest lived bars and restaurants in the area, its known by many tourists and locals alike, and is infamous for the "Goyo Challenge" where visitors were hoisted up by their ankles, much like a prized marlin catch, and given shots of their preferred alcoholic beverage.

Not only was the Giggling Marlin a pioneer of Cabo San Lucas, known for its at times rowdy nights, its also known for its whimsical and humorous approach to marketing itself as evidenced by the large giggling marlin at the front entrance holding a man hanging upside down as though the man had been caught. They also had a clever motto of: "If our food, drinks and service aren’t up to your standards, please lower your standards”.

The fate of the Giggling Marlin is unknown for now, as far as if it will be rebuilt and reopened eventually.
